Tuesday Tattles #3

Tuesday Tattles

I didn’t have a lot to add in month four so I have combined months four and five in one Tuesday Tattles post. A lot of the month three items are still going strong! My little man even enjoys the removable visual toy bar now.

Tomorrow my son will be five months old. That’s almost half a year old. I think this is his last month as a “newborn”. Where does the time go?!

In these past couple of months the little guy hit a growth spurt at double his birth weight he finally outgrew 0-3 month clothes and even some 3-6 month clothing is a little on the small side. Developmentally he has skyrocketed too, overnight he went from hating tummy time to rolling over and moving around the floor like he owns the place. The days of leaving him in the corner of the couch unaccompanied are over.

Infant Newborn-to-Toddler Bath

Bath time is a fun experience for the little guy and still a stressful experience for mommy. My fear of accidentally drowning my child keeps my confidence at bay. I keep one hand on him at all times. The tub comes with a “sling” that baby can lay on, keeping his head above the water. This sling helps ease my fears, and as soon as I see big smiles and splashing feet the stress gives way to enjoying bath time.

Bath time can also be a life saver when nothing else works. One afternoon I was blindsided by a constantly screaming child who could not be comforted. After an hour, exhausted, I called my mom and followed her advice: I first stripped him naked to make sure nothing was poking him, scratching him, and there weren’t hairs or strings wrapped around extremities. 10614267_10102333143773041_6435732815317197737_nIt was too cold and rainy to go for a walk so I got the bath ready. As soon as I got him in the bath tub the crying stopped. Relieved I watched him kick his feet. I extended this bath time as long as I possibly could – until it got too cold.

Hooded Towels

The bath leads me to favorite item number two. The hooded towel. Why? Because there isn’t anything cuter than a clean, wet baby wrapped in a hooded towel!

Infant Nail Clippers

Clipping baby fingernails isn’t one of those things I’d considered having to do before having a baby. I knew it was a necessary evil, but it’s simply not something you think of preparing for. And prepare for it you must! The first nail trimming is the most stressful moment for a new mom. I pushed the experience back and used a nail file until I could see that those tiny fingernails had broken away from the tender nail tip. And once those nails come away they grow faster than weeds! I highly encourage you to wait until nap time for that baby manicure. These infant nail clippers have a larger easy grip handle and some even have magnifying glasses!

Pre-teething began as soon as my little guy turned three months old. The classic Sophie was the first toy I gave him to slobber all over. Friends of ours even gifted him the the teething ring version, which he also loves. Honestly, he’ll chew on anything he can get his hands on, but with these I know he’s chewing on a safe and trusted toy.

Dr. Seuss’s ABC

This book is a family favorite. When I was little my mom would read this book to us. She even had it memorized so that when my brother and I got fussy in the car she could recite it to us. The magic that happens when you read this book aloud soothes babies. While I don’t yet have this book memorized, I’ve got most of it and have used it to calm a tired baby when humming fails.

Thursday Thoughts: Thanksgiving Edition

Thursday Thoughts

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! I hope you are enjoying the day spending it with family and friends, being thankful for all your blessings, and making memories that will last.

Whenever family gets together there are always stories to be created and memories to be shared. And there’s always something that doesn’t go as planned.

I want to share with you a Thanksgiving that I will never forget. Thanksgiving 2012. Or better known as the Thanksgiving of Plan B.

Family arrived at my house on Wednesday. Wednesday is the day a lot of casseroles are prepared, prep is done, and pies are baked. Before everyone arrived I’d baked the sweet potatoes for Papa’s Sweet Potato Casserole (SPC) and got that filling underway. What I failed to notice was that some delicious sweet potato leaked out of the potato and onto the heating element of the oven. (Lesson learned: I always put a sheet of aluminum foil on the rack below sweet potatoes when I bake them.)

Stuart’s sister arrived and was ready to get going on the pumpkin pie. She prebaked the pie crust before adding the filling and during that time the heating element cracked from the heat of the sweet potato deliciousness directly on the heating element, and a fire ensued. (A small fire, not the grease fire we created during the Bacon Wrapped Dates fiasco.) The moment of the night was my mother-in-law announcing, surprisingly calmly, “There’s a fire in your oven.”

At 8:40pm on Wednesday night we found ourselves calling all of the home improvement stores to see if they had the heating element part in stock – there’d be no way to get it Thanksgiving morning! We were out of luck. And we had to come up with a Plan B.

The pumpkin pie was finished in the toaster oven and the Pecan Pie was also made in the toaster oven Wednesday night. That toaster oven came in handy for crescent rolls on Thursday too.

A 22 pound stuffed turkey was not going to fit in the toaster oven. Luckily it fit in the grill – barely. We heated the grill to 350 degrees and treated it like an oven. The turkey was still in the roasting bag in the roasting pan. My brother elected himself as turkey-sitter. He kept running out into the chilly fall weather to ensure that the grill temperature stayed at 350.

While the turkey rested, out of the way in the oven! The casseroles went into the grill. All except for the SPC which wouldn’t fit. That had to be cooked in the microwave.

When we carved the turkey we realized that the half of the turkey towards the outside of the grill didn’t cook through all the way, but the half towards the inside of the grill was perfect. So half of the turkey was served with dinner while the rest returned to the grill for some more cooking.

Our Plan B Thanksgiving was a complete success and a cooking adventure I’ll never forget.

And the oven was fixed on Friday!

Tuesday Tattles #2

Tuesday Tattles

It’s hard to believe that my little man is over 3 months old already! I imagine I’ll be saying that at every month and every milestone. But it’s true! It’s amazing how much he changes every day. I feel like a lot has happened during this month, and it seems that my son’s happy days now outnumber his fussy ones.

Here are a list of the things that helped make this month so special.

Tuesday Tattles #2

10685502_10102438510986301_1797669741868615293_nMusical Mobile

When we put together my son’s room, it was complete with a traditional mobile over the crib. This one has a woodland theme to match his bedding. If the purpose of mobiles is to help lull babies to sleep then it doesn’t do it’s job. But what it does do is entertain my son and helps work on his tracking skills. He gets really excited when I turn it on and it’s beyond adorable to watch. I benefit from it’s distraction when I need to empty his diaper bin. (Cue Friends quote when Rachel is at her baby shower and doesn’t understand a diaper genie.)

Burp Rags and/or Bibs

I can’t stress this one enough! My son has turned into a slobber monster, what I call a “slobberpuss”. We are constantly wiping at his mouth fighting a never ending battle to keep his onesies dry. The doctor assured me that this is completely normal and will only get worse!

Bouncer

My mom bought a bouncer seat during a trip to Target because it was on sale. I was hesitant. I’m always nervous to spend money on something to find that my son hates it. At $22 my mom went for it. And I am so glad that she did! My little man loves sitting in his “big boy seat” as Stuart calls it. These seats come with removable visual toys and thank goodness they’re removable. I don’t know if my son is afraid of cartoon lady bugs and snails, but he hates having these toys in front of his face. Maybe they’re just too close for comfort. I’ll give them another try soon – maybe when he can reach them they’ll be fun and not scary.

IMG_0306Activity Gym

Activity gyms are a popular purchase for new moms and it’s obvious why. With different toys hanging down there’s always something “new” to look at. There’s even a mirror that can be attached to the gym. My son loves to look in the mirror and smile and coo at his “friend.” My favorite thing about this play mat is that it works his hand-eye coordination. As he gets older and learns how to use his hands he can grab the fox that hangs lowest and shake and rattle it, or simply bat at it to make noise. The hedgehog has a little device that plays an excerpt of “Rock-a-Bye-Baby” and the rabbit has a squeaky toy in it, when I squeeze them he looks towards the source of the noise. I love watching him grow and learn!

Thursday Thoughts #8

Thursday Thoughts

I’m posting a second Thursday Thoughts this month because there’s just so much going on!

We’ve been in our new house a little over a month now – and we’re getting closer to calling it home. We downsized when we moved to Ohio. I know, sounds crazy when we added a family member! With an older house we have much less storage space inside the home – but there’s a shed in the backyard and an add-on at the back of the garage where all of our extra furniture is housed in while here. Funnily enough I have a smaller kitchen, but more cupboard space. A very small amount of counter space though means the dishes pile up quickly; I’m still working on how to efficiently do my food prep. One thing I haven’t figured out is the lighting. The light fixtures, while new, have covers on them and provide a very yellow glow. I’ve been utilizing the covered back porch to get natural light and take my food outside to photograph. I’m not so sure foodgawker likes seeing grass in the background of my photos – it’s been a struggle to have images accepted on their site again. So, it’s back to square one with food photography. I do have a photobox that I might just have to become more proficient in using. If anyone has any tips please let me know!

IMG_0245We signed the lease for this house sight-unseen while still in Florida. We were hoping to avoid our belongings being placed in storage by having a door-to-door move. Unfortunately, our personal plans of a week’s vacation along the way meant that wouldn’t be possible. When we arrived, the house was smaller than we anticipated (the storage room I mentioned was included in the square footage, but it’s not a livable space). The photographs of the property that we saw online were accurate though, which was comforting. We were nervous this house wouldn’t work for us, but with creative use of space we’re happy with our new home. What is meant to be the dining room is our living room with couch, tv, and small table to eat on and the living room doubles as Stuart’s office and my craft space. The backyard is beautiful, too. The sink in the kitchen is underneath a window that looks into the yard and I love it!

I do love our neighborhood, and better yet, our neighbors! We always said we were “bad neighbors” in Florida. We’d always do the kind “wave hello” driving through the neighborhood and on our walks, occasionally we stopped to converse with the family on the corner. We vowed to be better neighbors when we moved and so far our neighbors have made that possible. Our next door neighbors stopped by to welcome us with fresh tomatoes from their garden. (You may have seen the photos on Instagram)

I’ve always heard that nothing can compare to homegrown tomatoes. That statement is absolutely correct. I don’t eat tomatoes plain – but these I could with a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Perfectly firm yet juicy and full of fresh flavor. I wanted to do these tomatoes justice – by not heating them! – and prepared two meals with them. We did BLTs that hit the spot and I created a tomato blueberry “salsa” to top grilled honey balsamic chicken which we ate over a bed of wild rice (photographed below).

Tuesday Tattles #1

Tuesday Tattles

When I saw I am a Honey Bee‘s latest post on her baby favorites pop up on my WordPress Reader I decided to be a copy cat and also share my favorite baby items each month. Just like my random ramblings are limited to Thursday Thoughts, I’ll be reserving these Tuesday Tattles for baby related posts.

Tuesday Tattles #1

As I missed month one, here are my favorite necessities over the first two months of motherhood.

IMG_9509Fisher-Price Newborn Rock n’ Play Sleeper

Stuart’s cousins gave us this contraption. Already having kids, they knew that this sleeper is more appealing to newborns than their crib or Pack N Play – lying flat is unnatural for newborns and this keeps them cradled and slightly upright.

My favorite feature of the Rock n’ Play is that I can drag it around the house!

Crane Adorable Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier

I wouldn’t have thought about adding this item to our baby registry if it weren’t for the Babies R Us check list, and now it’s one of my “must haves”! We have noticed a difference in Wesley’s breathing at night when we have the humidifier running – he is less wheezy and sleeps better for it.

Sun & Bug Cover

This netting fits over our car seat and does double duty. Not only does it keep the mosquitoes from biting, it also keeps the strangers from touching. We would utilize this cover on our walks to Publix when we were living in Florida. We also use it for restaurant dining when the option to sit outside is available.

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste

Diaper rash is inevitable, and this stuff works! I notice a difference in his red bottom after just one diaper change.

MammaBaby

In a generation addicted to cell phones (me included) there are many apps to help us manage our children. I have found one that I absolutely love. I can record his feedings (breast, bottle, and solid food), his sleep, and his diaper changes. It will also calculate percentiles when I input his height and weight. What we love about this app is that we can look back at the statistics to see if he’s eating more or less than usual, if he’s having the proper number of dirty diapers, and if he missed a couple naps.

photo (10)Graco SnugRide Click Connect 35 Car Seat

When we created our registry, we spent the most time picking out the stroller and car seat. We needed something that was safe and light enough for me to manage. This car seat is part of Graco’s click to connect line and it snaps perfectly in place into the coordinating strollers.

It’s obvious that a car seat is a necessary baby item, so why am I highlighting it? Wesley’s second month started out with a move from Florida to Ohio and this car seat became his best friend.

Thursday Thoughts #7

Thursday ThoughtsIf you’re a regular Sew You Think You Can Cook reader, you know that we have just relocated from the Florida Panhandle to the Miami Valley of Ohio. We opted to do a partial dity move, in which the Air Force hired and paid movers to transport the majority of our belongings and we took some of our items ourselves.

There are a lot of horror stories when it comes to military moves, and I’m happy to say we aren’t one of them. No, things didn’t go perfectly – bookcases, an entertainment unit, and a desk were broken; our ladder got lost along the way; a large vase broken; board game boxes crushed by bowling balls; and two boxes were investigated by mice.

I read other blog posts on moving tips and attended PCS meetings. We’d heard that the packers will pack literally everything – including the trash. While I couldn’t imagine that being true, I can see how it could happen. Our packers assured us they wouldn’t pack the trash (and I had all garbage cans emptied before they arrived), they did move everything. The night before the packers showed up, I went through the fridge and pantry and invited Kate over to come grocery shop. I had forgotten to get rid of the left over items (like the opened box of cereal and graham crackers) and they got packed along with the unopened boxes of pasta, rice, and canned foods. This box is one of the two that was of particular interest to the mice. The neighboring box (which happened to be my fabric stash) also got hit – and I lost a nice roll of batting.

Learning from other’s experiences I knew that I wouldn’t trust my grandmother’s antique secretary desk to the movers. And I am beyond grateful to my in-laws for helping us move this piece of furniture. If cheap pieces of furniture were broken – I can’t begin to imagine what might of happened to my antique. Other things I didn’t want to lose included – scrapbooks, quilts, and personal documents.

And then there were the necessities – everything that Wesley would need for the week, and anything we would need as well. I can’t stress this point enough – IF YOU HAVE LITTLE CHILDREN, MOVE THEIR THINGS YOURSELF. We spent 3 days in our new home before our delivery. That also means – don’t forget to pack a uniform. It’s a good thing we had one uniform set in our suitcase because Stuart had to report before our boxes arrived.

My last piece of advice – get help! Stuart’s parents helped with the move and my mom helped with the unpacking. Even with the extra hands, half of my house is in disarray!

Thursday Thoughts #5

Thursday ThoughtsToday my perfect baby boy is one week old!

As I’ve posted a Thursday Thoughts about my pre-term labor scare, I thought it’d only be fair to share my true labor story.

On July third I was scheduled for inducement. That’s right, after multiple pre-term labor scares and one month on bedrest my little one was 5 days late! We joke that he follows “Stuart time” – my husband’s definition of “a couple minutes” is at least 15 and “soon” could mean anywhere from 10-60+ minutes.

I was so nervous about having a holiday baby. Because I tend to obsess over holiday parties and themes I knew that I would struggle with having to share a birthday and holiday. Especially one of my favorite holidays! With my arrival time at the hospital of 4am I had 20 hours. (Of course, I knew that whatever day I finally became a mom wouldn’t matter. It’s definitely my new favorite day of the year!)

Here is the story of how Wesley entered the world:

At 3:15am I was eating a homemade waffle. And I had a cinnamon donut from Dunkin in the car on the way. At 4:00 we were checking in to the hospital. I absolutely loved my nursing staff and an IV was placed effortlessly. Hundreds of forms were signed and my food allergies recorded.

Around 5:30am they started the Pitocin drip at a rate of 2 miliunits/minute. After an hour that rate was increased to 4 and at 7:30 a resident came in to break my water. It was now at this point when I could feel the contractions.

I allowed the majority of my fluids to leak before changing tactics. I left the bed and bounced on the birthing ball. My mom rubbed my back through almost every contraction and I couldn’t be more grateful. As I was most definitely experiencing back labor, her efforts did not go unnoticed.

My biggest desire for “D-day” was to labor in water. In discussing this wish with my doctor earlier in the pregnancy I was informed that I could labor in the tub, but that I couldn’t deliver there. After a quick cervical check, my nurse informed me that if I wanted an epidural now would probably be the time. (I declined.) Additionally, if I wanted to get in the tub I’d have to do it now and have only 30 minutes before being asked to get out. This moment might be my favorite of the labor process – I was elated at my progress and knew that my chances of needing a c-section were slim-to-none.

After the bath my Pitocin drip was decreased from 6 back to 4. My contractions were back to back and the hospital team didn’t want to “over heat” my uterus! I returned to the birthing ball and also tried a few different positions in bed. The Pitocin was yet again reduced to 2 miliunits/minute before being cut off entirely.

I went quickly from 8 to 10 centimeters dilated and it was time to push at 1:00pm. The Pitocin drip was restarted to provide my contractions that extra oomph to help me push.

Pushing was such a frustrating and rewarding experience. It took at least 30-40 minutes for me to learn the technique. But two hours later, at 3:07pm it was all worth it.

The doctors lifted my baby up towards my husband and had him discover and declare, “It’s a boy!” My son was then placed skin-to-skin on my chest and Stuart cut the umbilical cord. I had to ask for my glasses back just so I could see this tiny person we created! As elated and proud as I was, I could only imagine what that moment was like for the newest dad!

Induced, Natural Delivery

Thursday Thoughts #4

Thursday Thoughts

I’ve uncovered a flaw in my Thursday Thoughts. … They have to be posted on Thursday! So typically I’ll write my post ahead of time, and just have to wait for the next open Thursday on the blog schedule. Therefore, this post, once scheduled, could be so out of date it’s ridiculous! (but I do re-read them for updates and edits the night before they go live) I expect the Thursday Thoughts posts to become more regular once I’m in full swing mom mode. 🙂

I’ve been back at work now that I’m in the “safe zone” of pregnancy. This is the tough stretch. I am thankful that I’m not overly uncomfortable and that I’m not huge all over. Although, my ankles and feet swell pretty badly by the time my eight hours of work are up. I know I should be patient, my due date isn’t until the 28th. (Keep in mind I started writing this post on the 17th.) But after being on bed rest for 6-7 weeks and having 4 scares of pre-term labor in all, now that baby is full term and it would be acceptable for him/her to arrive each day is torturous. Really, is it too much to ask for my little one to send me a meeting invite so i can put it on my calendar? 😉 It seems I had 8 1/2 months of contractions and now nothing.

Cinnamon Buttermilk MuffinFor my first week back at work I decided to make these muffins. One of my #bundtbaker blogger pals (Stacy) starts every week with #MuffinMonday. When this post arrived in my inbox I knew I had to make them. I even had buttermilk in the fridge just begging to be used. I’m not going to lie, I made these the same day I made cupcakes and had some leftover cream cheese icing. I definitely ate one with icing… which negates the muffin-ness. But oh so good. They’re good without the icing too and were perfect to get me through my daily 9am snack time.

photo 2Have you been watching the World Cup? Stuart is a big soccer fan (weekend mornings are always a battle between Food Network and Soccer) and had us play along with ESPN’s World Cup Pick Em and World Cup Bracket. I’m not gonna lie – I’m kicking his butt! As of Wednesday night, I am currently ranked 14,557 with an 87.7% while he is laying “low” at 62,864 with a 46.9%. We should’ve bet on it! It makes watching the matches more enjoyable having a team to root for. Unfortunately Spain’s poor performance is really going to mess with my bracket when that portion of the tournament starts. I have them in the final match! But, I’m sure my bracket won’t be the only one that’s SOL. I wish I were clever and creative enough to make these World Cupcakes. There’s nothing saying I can’t make them… but I just won’t feel as awesome as if I’d thought of them myself. Maybe my creative juices will flow better when I’m finally a mom?… probably not… unless sleep deprivation sparks genius.

Stuart’s siblings got us the super awesome Ninja Blender system for Christmas. And we’ve gone through phases with smoothie making. Stuart will always try to make a smoothie with protein powder in it when he comes home from the gym. So we try to keep a stocked freezer full of fruits. After a few days in a row of unhealthy eating I really wanted something light and refreshing for dinner. Stuart brought up the idea of smoothies and it was perfect! My new favorite is Raspberry Lemonade (frozen raspberries, lemonade, yogurt)! It’s actually been a nice addition to my breakfast too. Also delicious is Blueberry Pineapple (frozen blueberries, frozen pineapple, yogurt, milk). We like to take them with us on our evening walks.
